Herat Provincial Council chairman sentenced for corruption

KABUL -- Herat's Provincial Council chairman received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for corruption, media reported Monday (March 27).

Kamran Alizai Monday was found guilty of abusing his authority, said Shir Agha Munib, chairman of the Supreme Court, according to TOLO News.

Alizai, who is still in office and refused to attend the trial in Kabul, may appeal the verdict.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested Lieut. Gen. Mohammad Moeen Faqir, former commander of the 215th Maiwand Army Corps, in connection with charges of embezzlement and abuse of authority, TOLO News reported Monday. He is in a Kabul prison awaiting trial.

In the "past few months", the Afghan National Army has dismissed 1,394 personnel, including some commanders, for corruption, said Deputy Defence Minister Helauddin Helal, according to a Tuesday (March 28) report by Khaama Press.
