Ghani orders release of 70 Hezb-e-Islami prisoners

Staff Report

KABUL -- Afghan President Ashraf Ghani ordered the release of more than 70 imprisoned Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan (HI) members, as a number of bereaved families protested the order in Kabul.

The families accuse HI, a militant group, of killing their relatives.

Ghani signed the decree after the return of HI leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar to public life in accordance with a peace treaty signed last September, said Ghani's office, Khaama Press reported Monday (May 1).

The angered families demonstrated in Kabul Monday, according to TOLO News. They called on the government to ensure justice for the HI militants.
