Staff Report

KABUL -- Afghanistan's first women's magazine began publication Thursday (May 18), the New York Times reported Sunday (May 21). The magazine's first press run was 2,000 copies. Its frequency of publication was not reported.

Gellara's editor and founder is Fatana Hassanzada, 23, of Kabul. The magazine includes "standard ground, like fashion tips during pregnancy and interviews with young pop artists", as well as "more serious fare, like an article about breast cancer and an essay on a proposed family law that has been delayed for years by conservatives", according to the Times.
