Afghan parliamentary elections to take place in July 2018

KABUL -- Afghanistan will hold its delayed parliamentary elections next year, said the country's top polling official Thursday (June 22), almost three years after authorities repeatedly missed deadlines to choose a new assembly.

"After long consultations with concerned government bodies, we have decided to schedule the parliamentary election for July 7, 2018," said election commission chief Najibullah Ahmadzai.

He urged the government and international community to provide funding and support for the election, which will likely occur against the backdrop of a worsening security situation in Afghanistan.
