MAZAR-E-SHARIF -- A Spanish physiotherapist working for the Red Cross in northern Afghanistan was shot and killed Monday (September 11) by a wheelchair-bound patient, according to the Red Cross.

Lorena Enebral Perez, 38, was shot inside the aid group's rehabilitation centre in Mazar-e-Sharif, where she treated disabled children, women and men including amputees, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement.

Deputy Balkh Province police chief Abdul Raziq Qaderi said the man "opened fire on the doctor as soon as she entered the consultation room". The motive for the attack was not clear.
