LONDON -- Russia is funding Taliban militants in Afghanistan through a covert programme of laundered fuel sales, the London Times reported Monday (October 16), citing Taliban and Afghan officials.
Russian intelligence has been sending tanker fleets into Afghanistan and delivering free fuel to front companies abetting the Taliban, according to the report.
The Taliban turn around and sell the fuel, raising about $2.5 million (170.4 million AFN) per month, according to the Times.
