KABUL -- The US Department of State granted an exemption to Afghanistan to import fuel from Iran and ship non-sanctionable goods through the port of Chabahar in a bid to boost the Afghan economy, US Ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass tweeted Wednesday (November 7).
"After extensive consideration, the United States has provided an exception under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act to allow #Afghanistan to continue to import petroleum products from Iran and for shipment of non-sanctionable goods through #Chabahar Port for Afg," Bass tweeted, referring to the Iranian port situated on the Gulf of Oman.
On November 5, the US government reinstated all sanctions on Iran that it previously lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
