Iran exceeds enriched uranium stockpile limit in violation of nuclear deal

Salaam Times and AFP

TEHRAN -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Monday (July 1) that Tehran has exceeded a limit on its enriched uranium reserves set under a 2015 nuclear deal, semi-official news agency ISNA reported.

"Iran has crossed the 300-kg limit based on its plan," Zarif told ISNA.

Tehran May 8 announced it would no longer respect the limit set on its enriched uranium and heavy water stockpiles.

The Iranian government also threatened to go further and abandon more nuclear commitments unless certain countries involved in the deal help it circumvent sanctions, especially by letting it sell its oil.

The news comes amid heightened tensions after Iranian forces shot down a US drone over international waters and attacked several oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.
