GHAZNI -- NATO-led coalition forces opened fire after an "enemy insider" shot and killed an Afghan commander in Ghazni Province Wednesday (July 17), officials said.

Col. Mateen Mujtaba, who led the 3rd Afghan National Army Division in Ghazni Province, was conducting a security assessment in Qarabagh District when an Afghan soldier started shooting, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Mujtaba was "killed by an army soldier who was in fact an enemy insider", the statement said.

Mujtaba was boarding a helicopter when the killer opened fire, said Amanullah Kamrani, a member of the Ghazni Provincial Council.

"The attacker was killed when Americans returned fire," Kamrani told AFP.

The Taliban claimed responsibility.

No US or coalition troops were killed or injured, said the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission.

Separately, the Taliban killed least 20 Afghan commandos in Badghis Province Monday (July 15), officials said Wednesday.

The commandos were ambushed after flying into Ab Kamari District, according to Badghis Governor Abdul Ghafoor Malakzai.
