Afghan forces kill 44 Taliban fighters in southern provinces

GARDEZ -- Afghan forces killed at least 44 Taliban fighters in two separate operations in the country's south, the 203rd Thunder Corps of the Afghan National Army said in a statement Wednesday (August 28).

Security forces killed at least 37 Taliban militants and seized a number of weapons along the highway connecting Zurmat District, Paktia Province, to Mata Khan District, Paktika Province, said the statement.

A local commander of the Taliban's Red Unit was among those killed, the statement said.

Separately, Afghan forces killed seven Taliban members and wounded at least seven others in a clash in Ghazni city, Ghazni Province, said the same statement.

Officials did not provide details on the timing of either operation.
