68 Afghan militants, 5 troops killed

KABUL -- Fighting throughout Afghanistan killed at least 68 militants and 5 troops recently, media reported.

Afghan forces killed at least 64 militants in a 24-hour span in multiple provinces, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said July 20, according to the Afghanistan Times.

Five troops were killed in the fighting, the MoD added.

A recent air strike in the Babaji area of Helmand Province killed the Taliban's military chief for the province, Khaama Press reported, quoting the provincial government.

Security operations in two parts of Laghman Province killed at least three Taliban militants, provincial governor's spokesman Sarhadi Zwak said July 20, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

Meanwhile, the Taliban July 19 kidnapped a security guard assigned to a cell phone tower in Ghazni city, Ghazni Province, police said July 20, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

The Taliban set the tower on fire and seized the guard, provincial police said.
