Uruzgan closes 40 schools because of militancy

Staff Report

TIRIN KOT -- The on-going clashes in Uruzgan province left about 10,000 students out of school, Pajhwok Afghan News reported October 24, quoting government officials.

Some 40 schools were closed in Tirin Kot, Chora and Gezab districts of the province over the past two months, Uruzgan governor's spokesman Dost Muhammad Nayab said, adding that schools could not be re-opened until security is ensured.

Provincial Education Director Ehsanullah Nashir also confirmed the report, saying that most schools were closed temporarily in Tirin Kot, the provincial capital, and would be re-opened soon after security improves.
