KUNDUZ -- Afghan troops are engaged in fierce battles with the Taliban in two districts of Kunduz Province, media reported.
Militants were besieging Qalai-i-Zal and Dasht-i-Archi districts northeast of Kunduz city July 20, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported July 21, quoting Kunduz lawmaker Abdullah Qarluq.
Air strikes have halted militants' attempts to advance in those districts, provincial government spokesman Mahmood Danish said.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties this week, security officials told the Afghanistan Times July 21.
