23 Afghan militants, 11 troops killed

KABUL -- At least 23 militants and 11 soldiers were killed and 21 suspected insurgents arrested in recent violence across Afghanistan.

At least 16 militants, including three key "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) commanders, and 11 Afghan soldiers were killed in a 48-hour span, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Khaama Press reported July 26. Twenty militants were detained during these operations, the MoD added.

Seven militants were killed in Marjah District, Helmand Province, four in combat on July 26 and three by their own prematurely exploding land mine, officials said July 27, according to Pajhwok Afghan News. The date of the land mine explosion was not reported. Those deaths might have been included in the Khaama Press report.

Meanwhile, fighting July 27 in Baraki Barak District, Logar Province, killed three Taliban and four security personnel, district administrative chief Muhammad Rahim Amin told Pajhwok Afghan News. The clash erupted after militants attacked check-points in the Chaltan area of the district, he said.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) recently apprehended a suspected ISIL bomb-maker in Kama District, Nangarhar Province, TOLO News reported July 27.
