GHOR, Afghanistan -- "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) militants October 25 massacred at least 33 civilians in Chaghcharan, Ghor Province, officials said October 26, according to the Afghanistan Times.
The ISIL terrorists slaughtered the civilians after kidnapping them and taking them to an insecure area, provincial government spokesman Abdulhai Khatibi said. Various sources differed on the civilian death toll.
They killed the hostages after troops killed their commander, Farouq, and three accomplices, Khatibi said.
The dead hostages included three members of a civilian anti-ISIL force, another official said.
Condemnation came from the UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan, President Ashraf Ghani and local civilians.
Ghani promised revenge, his office said in an October 26 statement.
Firoz Koh residents October 26 marched through their city to protest the slaughter, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.
The dead civilians included six children; at least six Afghans were still missing, RFE/RL added.
