Afghan forces kill 79 militants; Taliban burn school in Jawzjan

KABUL -- At least 79 militants and 17 Afghan soldiers were killed nationwide in combat in the past 24 hours.

Troops killed at least 79 Taliban in a 24-hour span nationwide, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said October 31, according to the Afghanistan Times.

Seventeen Afghan soldiers were killed in the fighting, the MoD said.

Security forces October 30 killed at least 70 Taliban with an air strike in Chora District, Uruzgan Province, provincial governor's spokesman Dost Muhammad Nayab said, according to Khaama Press. Those 70 might have been part of the 79 reported killed by the MoD.

Menawhile, the Taliban October 28 burned down a school in Jawzjan Province, officials said October 31, according to the Afghanistan Times. The Taliban have set fire to about 300 Afghan schools in the past three months.

The Taliban entered a girls' school, beat up security guards and set chairs, books and classrooms on fire, provincial governor's spokesman Mohammad Reza Ghafoori said.
