Afghanistan asks UN to include Haibatullah on sanctions list

Staff Report

KABUL -- The Afghan government is asking the UN Security Council to include Afghan Taliban supreme commander Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada on its sanctions list and to remove Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan (HI) leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar from the same list, media reported.

During a meeting with a Security Council delegation in Kabul, President Ashraf Ghani urged the UN to add Haibatullah to the list, Khaama Press reported November 14.

In another move, the government will ask the Security Council to remove Hekmatyar's name from the list, Afghan National Security Adviser Muhammad Hanif Atmar told the delegation November 13, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

The HI recently renounced insurgency and signed a peace deal with Afghan government.

The Security Council delegation assured Kabul of its full support for implementing the peace pact, according to a statement issued after the meeting.
