Zabul governor, mayor survive militant attack

AFP/Staff Report

ZABUL, Afghanistan -- The Zabul Province governor and a mayor of a Zabul Province district on December 5 barely survived an assassination attempt, while the Taliban lynched a university student on December 2.

Gunmen ambushed Governor Bismillah Afghanmal and Mayor Karimullah Hakimi as they were travelling to Safa District, Afghanmal spokesman Gul Islam Siyal confirmed, according to Khaama Press.

Neither official was hurt.

Meanwhile, the Taliban kidnapped and hanged Kabul Polytechnic University student Faizul Rehman from his car in Chak District, Maidan Wardak Province, Afghan officials said.

Accusing Rehman of involvement in a Taliban member's death, they "hanged him [December 2] in public", Maidan Wardak governor's spokesman Abdul Rehman Mangal told AFP. "Local elders tried to mediate to release him, but they failed."

The Afghan Ministry of Interior said it had launched an investigation "to arrest and punish the perpetrators of this criminal act".
