Zabul air strikes continue, killing 31 Afghan militants

Staff Report

QALAT, Afghanistan -- Afghan air force sorties pounded militants in Zabul Province for a second straight day, killing 31 more militants, provincial governor's spokesman Gul Islam Siyal told Pajhwok Afghan News Tuesday (January 24).

The air force acted after receiving a tip from intelligence agencies, Siyal said, identifying the dead militants as Taliban and al-Qaeda members.

The air strikes are part of Operation Shafaq 2, the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces' winter offensive, he said.

On Sunday, another air strike killed 21 "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters in the same area, the provincial police confirmed, according to Khaama Press.
