Civilian casualties rose in Afghanistan in 2016, UN says

KABUL -- Civilian casualties rose 3.7% in Afghanistan in 2016 compared to 2015, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported, according to media.

In 2016, 3,498 civilians were killed, Khaama Press reported Monday (February 6).

Casualties caused by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) rose more than 10-fold in a year (899 compared to 82), the report said.

Sectarian attacks increased 6%, taking 87 lives.
