Forces retake Mirzawalang Valley where Taliban-ISIS massacre took place

SAR-E-PUL -- Security forces Monday (August 14) regained control of Mirzawalang Valley, Sar-e-Pul Province, confirmed local officials.

More than 40 militants were killed in the operations, said provincial Governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat, TOLO News reported Tuesday (August 15). Afghanistan Times gave the Taliban death toll as more than 100.

The militants overran the valley August 5 and slaughtered about 50 civilians.

Separately, troops have launched offensives against the Taliban in Paktia and Faryab provinces, reported media Monday.

Troops are now only 3km away from the centre of Janikahil District, Paktia Province, said local officials, according to Afghanistan Times. The district fell to the Taliban about two weeks ago.

Troops killed at least 60 Taliban militants in a battle for control of Ghormach District, Faryab Province, Khaama Press reported, adding that the dead militants included a shadow district chief and a number of commanders.
