Afghan ulema call Kabul attack 'cowardly'

Salaam Times

KABUL -- Afghanistan's General Council of Ulema has declared the Taliban to be enemies of the country after the group claimed responsibility for a deadly assault on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, Bakhtar News Agency reported Tuesday (January 23).

Taliban militants stormed the luxury hotel Saturday (January 20), killing at least 19 civilians.

"Afghanistan's General Council of Ulema harshly condemns the barbaric attack, and the enemies should understand that they will not achieve their goals by committing such cowardly acts," the council said in a statement Monday (January 22).

The attack had no justification on either human or Islamic grounds, said the statement.
