Khalilzad launches yet another international tour for Afghan peace

WASHINGTON -- US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad is set to visit Afghanistan, Qatar, Pakistan, India, Russia and Britain through May 11, the State Department said in a statement Monday (April 22).

Khalilzad Sunday (April 21) returned to Kabul on a marathon trip for talks, despite disappointment after the militants failed to meet with the Afghan government, said the statement.

The statement did not confirm whether he would meet again with the Taliban.

In the Qatari capital of Doha, "he will continue to press forward on negotiations with the Taliban to reach a consensus on core national security issues, and urge their participation in an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue", it added.

The statement came a day after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced disappointment over the impasse during a call with President Ashraf Ghani.
