US seeks peace in Afghanistan, not withdrawal, Khalilzad says

KABUL -- US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad Sunday (April 28) said that the United States is a seeking political settlement and that the withdrawal of foreign forces will be based on conditions, TOLOnews reported.

Khalilzad is in Kabul for his sixth visit since last November as part of the Afghan peace efforts.

"We are seeking peace and a political settlement, not a withdrawal," Khalilzad said in an interview with TOLOnews. "We want a peace which will provide the ground for withdrawal."

He dispelled rumours that foreign forces would be withdrawn ahead of a peace deal.

Both the US presence and its withdrawal are dependent on certain conditions, Khalilzad said.

"If conditions are provided earlier, we will not insist on remaining in Afghanistan forever," he said.
