NANGARHAR -- The local government in Nangarhar Province freed at least 32 former Taliban fighters from the central prison of Nangarhar, the provincial press office said in a statement Wednesday (June 12).

The move came after President Ashraf Ghani ordered the release of 887 Taliban prisoners on the eve of Eid ul Fitr June 4.

The United States welcomed the move.

"Welcome the #Afghan government’s efforts to improve the climate for a political settlement by releasing some Taliban prisoners for #Eid. Lasting peace will be rooted in reconciliation and forgiveness by all," US Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass said on Twitter Tuesday (June 11).
