226 Afghan militants, 8 soldiers killed

KABUL -- At least 226 militants and eight soldiers were killed in recent fighting across Afghanistan.

Recent counter-terrorism operations in multiple provinces killed at least 40 militants and eight Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers, Khaama Press reported June 1, quoting a Ministry of Defence (MoD) statement.

Troops killed 180 militants in Helmand Province in a three-day span, provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat said June 1, according to TOLO News.

Separately, police June 1 killed six Taliban, including a commander, in Ibrahim Khel village, Maidan Wardak Province, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said in a statement, according to the Afghanistan Times.

Meanwhile, authorities in Parwan Province recently detained three suspected Taliban members in connection with charges in the slaying of three aid workers in the province, officials said June 2, according to TOLO News.

The three aid workers, who were killed June 1, included a woman, local officials said.
