KABUL -- Recent nationwide fighting and terrorism in Afghanistan killed at least 70 militants, 16 soldiers and 3 civilians, media reported. Some deaths might have been reported twice.
At least 52 militants, including an al-Qaeda facilitator, and 13 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed in a 24-hour span nationwide, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said June 17.
Security forces June 17 killed a would-be suicide bomber who was targeting an Afghan Local Police outpost in Kot District, Nangarhar Province, Ataullah Khogyani, the provincial governor's spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Gunmen wearing military uniforms June 15 in Paghman District, Kabul Province, stormed a mosque and killed at least three civilians, TOLO News reported.
Two of the dead were government employees.
A recent Afghan Air Force air strike in Charchino District, Uruzgan Province, recently killed at least five militants, the MoD said June 16, according to Khaama Press.
Security forces June 16 in Pul-i-Alam, Logar Province, killed at least eight Taliban who attacked a security post, deputy provincial police chief Col. Nisar Ahmad Abdulrahimzai told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A June 15 clash in Pasaband District, Ghor Province, killed at least three troops and four militants, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.
Meanwhile, eight militants including a senior Taliban commander June 16 renounced the insurgency and joined the peace process in Qaisar District, Faryab Province, Col. Nezamuddin Qaisari, the district police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The group was active in Pashtun Kot District, he said.
