155 Afghan militants, 31 security personnel killed

KABUL -- At least 155 Afghan militants and 31 security personnel were killed recently across Afghanistan. Some casualty figures might have been duplicated.

Thirty-five militants and 15 Afghan troops were killed in recent fighting in Maiwand District, Kandahar Province, Pajhwok Afghan News reported June 15.

Troops in Shah Wali Kot District, Kandahar Province, recently killed about 20 militants, provincial governor's spokesman Samim Khpalwak said.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) recently detained eight suspected Taliban accused of plotting to attack Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, Khaama Press reported June 16.

Security forces killed at least 86 insurgents in a 24-hour span nationwide, the Afghanistan Times reported, quoting a June 15 statement by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Fifteen soldiers were killed, the MoD said.

Hadi Saighani, police chief of Kahmard District, Bamiyan Province, was killed June 15 in Saighan District, provincial governor Mohammad Tahir Zahir told Pajhwok Afghan News. Further details were not available.

Separately, troops recently killed at least 10 Taliban in an overnight operation in Khanshin District, Helmand Province, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Aqa Noor Kentoz said June 15, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

Accident rocket explosions recently killed at least three members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group in Kunar Province, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News June 15.

A senior Taliban leader June 14 was killed in internecine combat in Ghaziabad District, Kunar Province, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.
