Uzbeks face questioning after trips abroad

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbek citizens who return to Uzbekistan are undergoing questioning at police stations, even if their trips lasted only a few days, AsiaTerra reported June 7, quoting a Tashkent woman who returned from Azerbaijan.

The woman, who requested anonymity, said police asked her to come and talk about her trip to Azerbaijan. They compiled a list of Uzbeks who had gone to Azerbaijan and Belarus from information available at the Tashkent airport.

A police officer asked for the dates of her trip and the address where she stayed in Azerbaijan, the woman said.

At a larger police station, where she underwent further questioning, she encountered 10 other Uzbek travellers in the same situation, she said.

Several hundred radicalised Uzbeks have gone abroad to fight alongside militants in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
