Afghan violence kills 121 militants, 9 soldiers

KABUL -- At least 121 militants and nine Afghan troops were killed in separate incidents of violence across Afghanistan this week.

Afghan security forces’ air and ground operations in Nangarhar province killed at least 36 "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters in operations that began Monday night, Khaama Press reported June 15, quoting two separate statements from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

In Logar Province, National Directorate of Security operatives detained a bomb-making expert from the terrorist Haqqani Network and recovered 80kg of explosives from his possession during an operation in Mohammad Agha District, Afghanistan Times reported June 14.

In Jawzjan Province, security forces killed at least 37 militants, wounded 40 and detained 25, including five Taliban commanders, provincial spokesman Mohammad Reza Ghafoori said June 14.

Separately, 23 militants were killed and 14 injured during a military operation in Gereshk District, Helmand Province, the MoD said, adding that 25 additional militants were killed and 27 injured during air strikes carried out in the Bala Buluk District of Farah Province.

Meanwhile, the Taliban killed at least nine Afghan army soldiers and wounded five others June 14 in an attack on a security post in the Shesh Ab area of Khashrod District, Nimroz Province, an official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
