Afghan Taliban step up activity during Ramadan

JAWZJAN, Afghanistan -- The Afghan Taliban in Jawzjan Province have stepped up their activities in disregard of Ramadan, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Turkmen service reported June 14.

The Taliban June 12 attacked military check-posts near Sheberghan, RFE/RL correspondent Shamerdanguly Myradi reported.

Afghan troops in northern Afghanistan under the command of First Vice President and Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum struck back, calling in warplanes and inflicting heavy losses on the Taliban. They captured more than 20 Taliban.
