80 Afghan militants surrender

BADGHIS, Afghanistan -- About 11 Taliban groups comprised of 80 militants July 19 in Jawand District, Badghis Province, laid down their weapons and renounced the insurgency, TOLO News reported.

The surrendering militants were active in Jawand for eight years, officials said, adding that more than 2,000 insurgents have surrendered in Badghis Province so far.

The development will improve security and the provincial government will be able to re-open roads between Jawand and Qala-i-Naw, the provincial capital, after 14 years, Badghis Governor Muhammad Anwar Ishaqzai said.

The surrendering militants will receive job opportunities and all other assistance they need, the Badghis High Peace Council (HPC) office said.
