Britain, EU to aid Afghanistan

Staff Report

KABUL -- Britain is committing up to £750m (62.9m AFN) total between 2017 and 2020 to help Afghanistan develop, British Secretary of State for International Development Priti Patel said in an op-ed published in the London Independent October 1.

The money will improve the lives of women and girls and will "help clear deadly mines from areas where people live", Patel wrote.

"Our support to Afghanistan will help build a viable, long-term state in the face of significant Taliban aggression," she added.

Meanwhile, the EU is pledging €1.2 billion (92.3 billion AFN) over the next four years in aid to Afghanistan, EU foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini said, according to an October 5 report by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The pledge comes as leaders of Afghanistan and of more than 70 other countries gather in Brussels October 5 to discuss foreign aid to the war-torn country.
