KABUL -- At least 14 people were killed and 43 others sustained injuries in a militants' attack on an Ashura gathering in Kabul late October 11, officials confirmed, according to Afghanistan Times.

The worshippers were gathered to mourn the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), in the Kart-e-Sakhi shrine near Kabul University, when the attacker, wearing a suicide vest and dressed in a police uniform, opened fire on them, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

The attacker first killed a police guard, taking his gun, and then opened indiscriminate fire on the gathering, according to an eyewitness. He was fatally shot, Sediqqi said.

Meanwhile, three Taliban commanders were killed in a clash that erupted after a militants attack on the Maidanio, Harmal and Bibi Hajiri check-posts in Laghman province October 11, governor's spokesman Sarhadi Zwak told Pajhwok Afghan News.

An Afghan Local Police (ALP) member was killed and three others wounded during the clash, Zwak said.

At least 10 civilians, mostly children, were wounded when two mortar shells landed on a house during the fight.

Separately, security forces killed at least 24 militants during Operation Shafaq-95 in Kandahar, Uruzgan and Zabul provinces, Maj. Amir Muhammad, spokesman for the 205th Atal Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News October 11.
