10 policemen, 4 militants killed in Jawzjan shoot-out

Staff Report

KABUL -- At least four militants and 10 police officers, as well as a police officer's wife, were killed Saturday (February 24) in a gun battle in Darzab District, Jawzjan Province, officials said Saturday (February 25).

The militants ambushed the officers as they were coming out of a mosque after evening prayer, provincial government spokesman Mohammad Reza Ghafoori said, according to Afghanistan Times.

The wife of a slain police commander was killed when she rushed to the site, said Ghafoori.

Four of the attackers were killed by retaliatory gunfire, said provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Rahmatullah Turkistani, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The Taliban claimed responsibility but Ghafoori blamed the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).
