Afghan forces kill 20 Taliban militants in foiled attack in Helmand

KANDAHAR -- Afghan security forces Friday (March 1) killed at least 20 Taliban militants after they attempted to storm a military base in Helmand Province, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

At least 23 Afghan troops were killed in the hours-long clash, said the Saturday (March 2) statement.

Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed the death toll, adding that the Taliban deployed at least seven suicide bombers who were killed during the fighting, AFP reported.

At least 16 Afghan security personnel were injured, the statement added.
